Juchitán former mayor Miguel Sánchez Altamirano charged with extortion

Authorities in Oaxaca have formally charged former Juchitán de Zaragoza mayor Miguel Sánchez Altamirano, known as “Quetu,” and Carlos Alberto de la Paz López, alias “La Parka,” with aggravated extortion and crimes against state security. The judicial decision follows a coordinated operation on September 23 involving the Oaxaca State Prosecutor's Office, the Mexican Navy, and federal security forces.

Investigations link the defendants to “Los Cromos,” a criminal group identified as an operational arm of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region. The group is allegedly involved in drug trafficking, homicide, kidnapping, and extortion of local merchants and migrants. Authorities are also investigating whether Sánchez Altamirano used municipal security infrastructure, such as C2 camera systems, to alert criminal cells to the movements of law enforcement.

In addition to the former mayor, Jhon Keny Moreno Segura, the former police commissioner of Juchitán, has been charged for allegedly providing protection to the criminal group. Both Sánchez Altamirano and Moreno Segura are being held under preventive detention. Sánchez Altamirano has been transferred to the El Altiplano federal prison, while La Parka is being held in Veracruz.
