Mexican regions expand access to free funeral services

In Baja California, Deputy María Teresa Méndez Vélez has proposed a reform to the State Social Assistance Law to provide free funeral services for vulnerable families and those lacking economic resources. The initiative seeks to modify the State DIF System's mandate to ensure that funeral services are provided free of charge to those in need, while maintaining low-cost options for the general public.

Separately, in La Paz, Baja California Sur, the City Council unanimously approved a measure to exempt families of missing or unlocated persons from funeral service fees. This program covers costs related to municipal cemeteries, including inhumation, exhumation, grave acquisition, and cremation. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate a direct familial link and provide documentation such as an active investigation file or an official search notice.
