Mexican regulator warns of bank transfer mistakes and phone scams

Mexico's consumer‑financial watchdog, the Comisión Nacional para la Protección y Defensa de los Usuarios de Servicios Financieros (Condusef), issued guidance on two common banking problems.

For erroneous transfers, Condusef advises customers to contact their bank immediately, noting that "if you notice you sent money to the wrong account, the first thing is to communicate with your bank." Early reporting may allow the operation to be stopped before it is fully processed; otherwise recovery depends on the recipient's cooperation and may require legal action.

Condusef also highlighted the rise of phone and SMS fraud, warning that scammers use urgent messages to obtain personal data. A delegate said, "People enter a state of worry or even panic, and that is exactly the moment criminals exploit," and stressed, "If a person receives an alert, they must communicate only with the phone number that appears on their card or official bank channels." The agency provides a portal for reporting fraudulent numbers and encourages users to stay calm and verify any alerts directly with the bank.
