Mexican retirees launch consultation to protest pension cuts

Members of the Alianza Nacional de Jubilados have launched a nationwide citizen consultation to protest pension cuts resulting from reforms to Article 127 of the Constitution. In Xalapa, Veracruz, organizers established voting stations at Parque Juárez to collect signatures and public support.

Fernando Segura Barradas, a retiree from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), stated that the legislative changes have retroactively impacted salary perceptions and rights previously acquired by workers. The movement highlights significant financial impacts on former employees of various state entities, including CFE, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), the former Luz y Fuerza del Centro, and various development banks.

The consultation began on August 21 and is scheduled to run for seven days, concluding on August 28. Organizers warn that these cuts set a dangerous precedent that could eventually affect both active employees and retirees across other government sectors.
