Mexican security agencies warn against predatory loan apps and extortion

Security agencies in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Nayarit have issued warnings regarding fraudulent digital loan applications and 'gota a gota' (drop-by-drop) lending schemes. These predatory practices often target individuals through social media advertisements promising immediate cash with minimal requirements.

Authorities report that once these applications are installed, they frequently request permissions to access a user's contacts, photographs, and personal files. Criminal operators then use this information to harass, threaten, or extort victims and their families when high interest rates or modified repayment terms cannot be met.

To prevent falling victim to these schemes, officials recommend verifying that any financial institution is registered with the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (CONDUSEF) via the SIPRES system. Citizens are advised to avoid downloading apps from unknown links, limit device permissions, and never make advance deposits to secure a loan. In cases of threats or violence, authorities urge victims to contact emergency services or use anonymous reporting lines.
