Mexican Senate approves civil protection training for military service

The Mexican Senate has unanimously approved reforms to the Military Service Law to incorporate civil protection training into the National Military Service (SMN). With 104 votes in favor, the measure mandates that the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) provide conscripts with basic instruction in risk management, first aid, and emergency response to natural disasters.

Legislators noted that the reform aims to leverage the discipline and territorial presence of the military to strengthen a culture of prevention and solidarity. While the training does not replace existing civil protection authorities, it allows Sedena to request assistance from conscripts to support populations in their local communities or regions during emergencies, following established regulations.
