Mexican Senate approves land tenure reform for female farmers

The Mexican Senate has approved a reform to the Agrarian Law aimed at facilitating land tenure for female farmers. With 101 votes in favor, the measure seeks to ensure women can obtain titles to social property lands and access productive resources and activities in the countryside.

The reform mandates that the Federal Executive implement specific strategies and actions to expand women's access to ejidos and agrarian communities. It also introduces gender-inclusive language into the Agrarian Law to protect equality between men and women in the agricultural sector.

Ángel García Yáñez, president of the Agrarian Reform Commission, stated that while women have worked the land and defended their communities for generations, their rights have not always been recognized. He described the modification as an evolution of agrarian justice. Martha Lucía Micher Camarena, president of the Commission for Gender Equality, noted that the lack of land ownership affects women's economic security, heritage, and decision-making capacity within their communities. The project has been sent to the Chamber of Deputies for ratification.
