Mexican Senate authorizes entry of 139 U.S. troops for joint training
The Mexican Senate has unanimously approved the entry of 139 armed U.S. military personnel into Mexico to participate in a joint training exercise. The authorization, granted with 75 votes in favor, allows members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division to enter the country from September 20 to September 30, 2026.
The specialized training will take place at the National Training Center in Santa Gertrudis, Chihuahua. The exercises are designed to strengthen operational capabilities between the Mexican and U.S. Armed Forces through simulated missions, including infiltration, neutralizing sniper positions, and target extraction using live fire.
The troops are scheduled to arrive at the 5th Military Air Zone in Santa Gertrudis via a U.S. Air Force aircraft. This military cooperation occurs amid heightened bilateral tensions regarding drug trafficking and migration, following previous diplomatic friction involving U.S. intelligence agents in Mexico.
