Mexican Senate Demands Funding Boost for Consular Services to Migrants in the United States

Senator Carolina Viggiano (PRI) urged the Mexican government to restore the 2018 budget level for the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and its consular network, arguing that cuts have left Mexican migrants in the United States without adequate legal and consular protection. She highlighted that the 2018 budget of 8.7 billion pesos (about 12 billion pesos in today’s terms) has been reduced to 9.294 billion pesos for 2025, a real loss of 3.535 billion pesos. Funding for protection, assistance and consular services fell from 836.4 million pesos in 2018 to 524 million pesos in 2025, a 37.3 % decline, and the 300 million‑peso Migrant Support Fund was eliminated.

PRI leader Alejandro Moreno echoed the call, stating that the party stands with Mexican migrants in the United States and condemning the Morena administration for dismantling programs such as the 3×1 Migrants initiative and the Migrant Support Fund. He demanded the reinstatement of these programs and a stronger diplomatic and consular presence to safeguard migrants who generate over $60 billion in annual remittances for Mexico.
