Mexican Senate Energy Commission targets gas production and theft prevention

The Mexican Senate Energy Commission, chaired by Senator Beatriz Robles Gutiérrez, has approved its Annual Work Program for the third year of the LXVI Legislature. The legislative body aims to strengthen energy sovereignty, security, and sustainability while supporting the sector's development.

A primary focus of the plan is addressing the fact that approximately 75 percent of the natural gas consumed daily in Mexico is currently imported. To mitigate this dependency, the commission intends to increase national production and optimize fuel utilization, particularly to meet rising electricity and gas demands driven by new growth hubs.

Additional objectives include monitoring hydrocarbon exploration and extraction, increasing national content in energy contracts, and improving coordination between agencies such as the Ministry of Energy, Pemex, CFE, the Tax Administration Service, Customs, and the Navy. This inter-agency cooperation is intended to enhance traceability and combat the illegal theft and transfer of hydrocarbons. The program also outlines a planned energy transition toward clean electricity and renewable sources, including solar, wind, tidal, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy.
