Mexican Senate publishes memoirs of the 1916 Feminist Congress

The Senate of the Republic, through its Board of Directors, the Belisario Domínguez Institute, and the Technical Unit for Gender Equality, has published the book ‘Memorias del Congreso Feminista 2026’. The work recovers the voices of women who participated in the 1916 Feminist Congress in Yucatán, which laid the groundwork for gender equality, education, and political participation.

Senate President Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez announced that the publication serves as a recognition of these visionary women. The original 1916 congress addressed critical issues such as women's rights, sexuality, maternity, and economic emancipation.

To commemorate the 110th anniversary, a new congress was held on January 16, 2026, at the Antigua Casona de Xicoténcatl. This recent gathering brought together women from various public offices and social activism sectors to analyze progress and remaining challenges. During the event, Castillo Juárez called for a substantive equality agenda to guarantee social, economic, political, and cultural rights.
