Mexican Senate seeks stronger hurricane alerts and fishing aid

The Mexican Senate is moving to strengthen disaster response and support for communities impacted by tropical cyclones. The Senate's Public Security Commission approved a proposal to urge authorities to reinforce early warning systems and preventive actions for the 2026 hurricane season. This includes calls for the National Civil Protection Coordination and the National Water Commission to improve monitoring, evacuation protocols, and the capacity of temporary shelters, particularly for storms that intensify rapidly.

Simultaneously, the Senate's Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission has called for emergency aid and damage inspections for fishing and aquaculture communities affected by hurricanes Polo and Rachel. These storms caused significant damage to vessels and infrastructure across several states, including Sonora, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Oaxaca. Specific impacts were noted in Sonora, where thousands of people and homes were affected, and in Nayarit, where storm surges caused flooding and loss of equipment for local cooperatives.
