Mexican Senate to debate football promotion and relegation

The Mexican Senate will host a discussion regarding the consequences of eliminating promotion and relegation in Mexican football. The forum, titled ‘Fuera de Lugar ¿Por qué es injusto cancelar el ascenso y descenso en el fútbol?’, is scheduled for Monday, September 21.

Organized by the Movimiento Ciudadano parliamentary group and led by Senator Clemente Castañeda, the event aims to analyze the sporting, economic, labor, and legal impacts of the current closed competition system. The discussion includes participation from legislators, club executives, players, lawyers, and sports journalists.

The debate follows the Mexican Football Federation's decision to extend the suspension of movement between Liga MX and the Expansion League beyond the originally established period. While the Senate is not yet voting on a formal proposal to force Liga MX to change its regulations, the forum seeks to generate proposals for a more transparent and financially viable open competition system.
