Mexican Senator calls for US coordination to protect Mexican wolf

Mexican Senator Karen Castrejón Trujillo has called on the Secretariats of Foreign Affairs and Environment and Natural Resources to strengthen coordination with the United States to protect the Mexican wolf.

Through a formal agreement, Castrejón Trujillo warned that a recent executive order from the U.S. President, aimed at supporting ranchers in combating livestock depredation, poses a “new threat” to the species. She noted that this measure could jeopardize progress made in recovering wolf populations in both Mexico and the United States.

The senator proposed that the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources, in coordination with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, provide the Senate with a report on the Mexican wolf population within Mexico. The proposal has been referred to the Commission on Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change.
