Mexican Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña travels to Cuba for Fidel Castro centenary
Mexican Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña, a member of the ruling Morena party, has traveled to Havana, Cuba, to participate in commemorations for the 100th anniversary of Fidel Castro's birth.
Noroña expressed his solidarity with the Cuban people amidst their current socioeconomic challenges and defended his decision to attend the milestone, stating, “the commander doesn’t turn 100 every day,” and asserting that skipping the event would have been an act of cowardice.
During his remarks, the senator also criticized U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding his comments on Cuba. Noroña characterized Rubio as being ignorant of historical realities, noting Castro's ability to navigate decades of economic blockades and assassination attempts.
