Mexico sees surge in missing persons cases as families intensify searches

A collective of families and activists in Veracruz reported 25 missing‑person cases between January and June 2026, with only three individuals located alive. The group Justice and Dignity said most victims are working‑age men and highlighted ongoing searches in municipalities such as Tres Valles, Paso de Ovejas and Medellín de Bravo.

Madres Buscadoras, a network of mothers from Quintana Roo, expanded their search operations into neighboring Yucatán. In a meeting with Yucatán’s attorney general, they requested stronger coordination to follow leads that cross state borders, noting that the effort is self‑funded and aims to locate relatives still missing.

In Cancún, authorities rescued a 12‑year‑old boy who had been missing for four days after a tip led police to a hotel room on Avenida Tulum. The child was initially with an adult, presumed to be his father, who remains unlocated. Investigators are examining the hotel's role and continue to search for the adult companion.
