Mexican solar industry warns of technical flaws in welfare program
The Mexican photovoltaic industry has raised concerns regarding technical deficiencies in the ‘Techos Solares del Bienestar’ program. Marco Antonio Guzmán, president of the Mexican Photovoltaic Industry Association (AMIF), reported that the initial phase of the program in Mexicali and San Felipe, Baja California, and Hermosillo, Sonora, has resulted in substandard infrastructure.
Guzmán noted that installers are using oversized solar modules, ranging from 650 to 710 watts, instead of the 550-watt modules typically required for residential projects. This can hinder growth due to the massive size of the modules. He urged the government to regulate the sector, suggesting models similar to the United States or Germany to ensure higher quality and safety standards, particularly regarding MC4 connectors.
Additionally, experts warned that Mexico lacks the specialized personnel and protocols to manage risks associated with energy storage batteries, such as thermal runaway or fire hazards caused by improper handling. The program, funded by the federal government, aims to help low-income families reduce electricity bills by up to 60 percent.
