Mexican state congresses move to suspend or revoke mayors over legal issues

The Puebla State Congress received a formal request to revoke the mandate of Guadalupe Lucero Bárcenas, mayor of Acatlán de Osorio. Deputies will analyse the case and have ordered an extraordinary audit of the municipality’s finances to detect possible irregularities. The analysis will consider evidence from the state prosecutor, the state audit office and the human‑rights commission before deciding whether to advance the revocation process.

In Morelos, the state legislature voted unanimously to suspend the mayors of Cuautla and Atlatlahucan, Jesús N and Agustín N, who face criminal proceedings for serious offenses. The Congress ordered the municipal councils to call the legally designated alternates—Salvador Molina in Cuautla and Gerardo Espinoza Torres in Atlatlahucan—to assume office pending resolution of the legal cases.
