Mexican State Election Bodies Face Budget Cuts Ahead of 2027 Gubernatorial Vote

State governments and local legislatures in Mexico have reduced funding for four Local Public Electoral Organizations (OPLE) that must organize the 2027 gubernatorial elections. The OPLEs of Colima, Guerrero, Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí are under red or yellow alerts from the Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) because of insufficient resources to cover operating expenses.

The INE reports that the OPLE of Colima cannot pay municipal council salaries and may cease operations by July unless the local congress approves additional funds. Similar budget shortfalls affect OPLEs in Guerrero, Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí, flagged with medium‑risk yellow alerts. Nine other entities with elections next year—Baja California, Campeche, Colima, Nuevo León, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Tlaxcala and Zacatecas—are awaiting local government approvals for expanded budgets.

Without the requested allocations, these electoral bodies risk being unable to carry out essential processes for the upcoming elections.
