Mexican state officials weigh political candidacies

Government officials in the Mexican states of Veracruz and Hidalgo are navigating political speculation regarding potential candidacies in upcoming electoral processes.

In Veracruz, despite rumors of cabinet departures ahead of the electoral season, Secretary of Labor Luis Arturo Santiago Martínez and Undersecretary of Livestock Carlos Jiménez remain in their current roles. Both officials have indicated that their political futures depend on Governor Rocío Nahle. While some officials, such as Social Development head Margarita Santopietro Peralta, are viewed as potential candidates for federal deputy positions, Santiago and Jiménez are currently focused on their administrative duties.

In Hidalgo, Governor Julio Menchaca Salazar acknowledged that some members of his administration are considering resigning to pursue candidacies for the 2027 elections. The governor noted that while there are capable profiles within the government structure, those who choose to leave their posts to run for office will not be permitted to return to their previous positions. He emphasized the need for officials to define their participation early to avoid gaining unfair advantages.
