Mexican states fail fiscal transparency standards, report Aregional

Mexican states have failed to meet fiscal transparency standards, according to the 2026 Fiscal Transparency and Availability Index (ITDIF) released by the consultancy Aregional. The national average score fell to 59.38 points, a decrease of 1.94 points compared to 2025.

Cutberto Anduaga, director of Aregional, noted that public information has devalued because officials often lack awareness of their responsibilities and the sanctions for non-compliance. He highlighted a lack of standardized data, which prevents effective comparisons, and warned that state governments often limit information sharing to legislatures rather than making it available on public portals.

Regarding official compensation, the report indicates that only one in five local governments provides a detailed breakdown of salaries for public officials, including governors' offices. The states identified as most lagging in providing detailed salary information include Aguascalientes, Mexico City, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Sonora, Tabasco, and Yucatán. Furthermore, only 22 percent of local governments provide breakdowns for representation expenses, a lack of transparency that experts warn increases the risk of corruption.
