Mexican states report shifts in water funding, debt, and security
Various Mexican states are reporting significant shifts in fiscal and social indicators. In Chihuahua, the federal government's 2026 budget projection includes a 35 percent reduction in water subsidies, totaling 83.6 million pesos. This includes a 25 percent cut for potable water and a 48 percent decrease in hydro-agricultural subsidies. Mario Mata, director of the Junta Central de Agua y Saneamiento, noted that these reductions will likely need to be absorbed by state and municipal governments.
In Tamaulipas, Finance Secretary Carlos Irán Ramírez González reported that the state is projected to end the current six-year term with a public debt of 14.4 billion pesos. Despite this, the state has reduced its debt by approximately 1 billion pesos over the last four years. Revenue through July reached 7.8 billion pesos, which is 800 million pesos above projections.
Meanwhile, in Sonora, the perception of insecurity has dropped by 13.37 percent since the start of Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño's administration, according to the ENVIPE 2026 survey. The state also saw a 5 percent decrease in insecurity perception over the last year, placing it below the national average.
