Mexican states strengthen civil protection ahead of rainy season

Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño of Sonora presided over the State Civil Protection Council, installing a Command Post to coordinate preventive actions and emergency response across the state’s 72 municipalities. The initiative aims to improve readiness for floods, strong winds and landslides during the upcoming rainy and tropical cyclone season.

Governor Rocío Nahle García of Veracruz announced reinforced prevention measures, including the deployment of river‑level monitoring equipment and the use of the updated State Risk Atlas to protect residents from anticipated El Niño‑driven storms, hurricanes and river overflows. Coordination involves federal agencies, the armed forces and public security plans.

In Colima, the State Protection Civil Unit and the municipal fire department conducted a full‑scale earthquake‑simulation drill, rescuing nine trapped individuals from a collapsed two‑story house under conditions mimicking a magnitude‑7.7 quake. The exercise supports the unit’s accreditation process and improves response capabilities for large‑scale emergencies.
