Ángela Karime Hernández wins gold at international science competition

Ángela Karime Hernández Venegas, a student from CETIS 78 in Altamira, Tamaulipas, has won the gold medal at the 2026 International Science and Technology Competition (ISIF) held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Her winning project, titled ‘Vortex Tech,’ is an early fire detection and suppression system. The device uses thermal sensors and low-frequency acoustic waves (30 hertz) to create air turbulence and vortex rings. This process displaces the oxygen feeding the flame, extinguishing the fire without the need for water, foam, or chemical powders.

Developed with the support of her advisor, Professor José Arturo Hernández Muñoz, the project competed against more than 800 entries from 25 countries. In addition to the gold medal, Hernández Venegas received the ‘Iysa Semi Grand Award,’ which grants her the right to participate in the Indonesia International Applied Science Project Olympiad (I2ASPO 2026) this December.
