Mexican Supreme Court President Hugo Aguilar Faces Recusal Call from Michoacán Congress

Baltazar Gaona García, president of the Mesa Directiva of the Michoacán State Congress, criticised the personal reception given by Supreme Court President Hugo Aguilar Ortiz to Uruapan mayor Greece Quiroz García. The meeting, which took place while a constitutional challenge to Michoacán’s electoral reform is being processed, raised concerns about the impartiality required by Article 17 of Mexico’s Constitution.

Gaona announced he will seek a formal recusal of Aguilar from the case and will file an "extrañamiento" – a formal protest – against the Supreme Court, demanding that the matter be resolved with complete objectivity. The challenge, mounted by the Movimiento Ciudadano party, concerns provisions on independent candidacies introduced by the state’s LXXVI Legislature. Gaona also used the opportunity to denounce perceived favoritism among political parties in the state.
