Mexican Taekwondo Champion Cecilia Lee Faces Nationality Controversy

Seo Hyun Cecilia Lee Kim, born in Monterrey, has represented Mexico for years in international taekwondo. At the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo she earned a silver medal in poomsae individual and gold in mixed‑pairs with partner William Arroyo.

A Guatemalan sports page, Liga Nacional GT, posted a message celebrating its own champion Alejandra Higueros while calling Lee a “surcoreana” and placing the word “Mexicana” in quotation marks, implying she was not truly Mexican. The post was widely shared before being removed. Lee responded by emphasizing her Mexican birth and representation, rejecting the idea that nationality can be judged by appearance, and the incident sparked broader debate about racial prejudice and national identity in sport.
