Mexican teen Gilberto Mora breaks World Cup records, attracts €40 million transfer bids

Seventeen‑year‑old Gilberto Mora of Club Tijuana has become the youngest Mexican ever to play at a FIFA World Cup, appearing at 17 years and 79 days. He also became the second‑youngest player in World Cup history to start a knockout‑stage match, behind Pelé, and the youngest ever to win a senior tournament when he lifted the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup at 16. In Liga MX he set multiple age records, including the youngest scorer, assist provider and starter.

Mora’s performances at the 2026 World Cup have sparked intense European interest. Bayern Munich leads the chase, with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United also monitoring the midfielder. His market value is estimated at about €40 million, though FIFA regulations prevent an international transfer before he turns 18 in October 2026. Bayern and other clubs are exploring pre‑contract agreements and possible loan moves, such as a stint in MLS with Inter Miami, while his contract with Tijuana runs until 2029, giving the Mexican club strong negotiating leverage.
