Gilberto Mora becomes Mexico's youngest World Cup player at 2026 tournament
Seventeen‑year‑old midfielder Gilberto Mora shattered a 96‑year record on 13 June 2026, becoming the youngest player ever to represent Mexico at a World Cup. He entered the opening group‑stage match against South Africa at Estadio Azteca in the 66th minute, replacing Álvaro Fidalgo, as more than 80,000 fans chanted his name. Mexico went on to win 2–0.
At 17 years and 240 days, Mora broke the previous record set by Manuel Rosas in 1930. He is also the youngest competitor in the entire 2026 tournament and the youngest player to ever feature for the Mexican senior side, having previously debuted for Club Tijuana at 15 and won the 2025 Gold Cup at 16.
Coach Javier Aguirre praised him as “once‑in‑a‑generation” talent, saying “He has that little extra something. Gilberto has the talent that Benjamín Galindo or Cuauhtémoc Blanco had in their time.” European clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and AC Milan are monitoring his progress, though current regulations prevent a transfer until he turns 18 in October. Tijuana has secured him on a new three‑year contract with clauses anticipating a substantial future fee.
