Mexican theatrical productions highlight cultural heritage

Various theatrical productions are highlighting Mexican cultural heritage and traditions. In Xalapa, the Oaxacan company Pelo de Gato is presenting “El Coyul” at the Teatro La Caja UV from October 9 to 11. Starring Esmeralda Aragón, the one-woman show features over 20 characters to depict the daily life and struggles of an indigenous community in San Pedro Huamelula, Oaxaca. The play addresses themes such as indigenous identity, feminism, environmental issues, and the impact of the 2017 earthquake.

Additionally, the multidisciplinary spectacle “Las andanzas de La Catrina” is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Directed by Germán Gastélum, the production uses magical realism, traditional music, and folk dance from the Ballet Mexicatlalli Ollin Yoltic to explore Mexican folklore and Day of the Dead traditions. The show incorporates literary references to figures like Pedro Páramo and La Llorona, with special anniversary performances scheduled for late October.
