Mexican towns roll out new programmes to boost women’s welfare and safety

In the municipality of Nicolás Romero, Mayor Yoselin Mendoza approved the appointment of Ericka Flores Hernández as Director of Social Welfare and Thamara Ivonne González Rodríguez as Director of Women, Inclusion and Equity during the 37th Extraordinary Cabildo session. Both appointees hold law degrees from UNAM and have extensive experience in gender‑equality roles; González previously received a commendation from Mexico’s president for her work on gender equity.

Meanwhile, in Morelia, municipal President Alfonso Martínez Alcázar and Secretary Yankel Benítez Silva highlighted the “Comunidad Punto Naranja” network, an integrated protection system for women. The program now operates over 402 safe‑point locations across public and private spaces and is supported by a free mobile app that sends real‑time alerts with geolocation to the local police. The initiative, led by Semmujeris director Nuria Gabriela Hernández Abarca, has been credited with removing Morelia from the list of the hundred Mexican cities with the highest rates of violence against women.
