Mexican transporters protest exclusion from federal canal project

Cargo transporters in Camajoa, El Fuerte, Sinaloa, staged a protest on October 23, 2026, regarding the Alto canal lining project. Approximately 50 transport units blocked the area to denounce the Secretariat of National Defense (Defensa) for allegedly displacing local workers.

Protesters claim that the federal agency has contracted companies from other states, including Sonora, Zacatecas, and Culiacán, instead of utilizing the local workforce. Local transport alliances, including members of the CNOP, CTM, and Río Zuaque, stated they expected to participate in the public works project to alleviate a severe regional economic crisis but were instead excluded from material hauling duties.

The demonstrators are demanding a dialogue with the federal government to address their exclusion and seek a solution to the economic impact on the local sector.
