Mexican universities expand AI use in education and agriculture

Academic institutions in Mexico are expanding their integration of artificial intelligence and mobile technology across various sectors.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has decided to adopt a formative rather than prohibitive approach to mobile device use in classrooms. Following discussions regarding potential restrictions, the UNAM Artificial Intelligence Coordinating Council (CCOIA-UNAM) will conduct a diagnostic study to assess how mobile devices and AI are used across university departments. The institution also plans to increase training for teaching staff on the pedagogical use of AI and mobile tools.

In Coahuila, a collaborative effort between the Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila (UAdeC), the Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro (UAAAN), and CINVESTAV is focusing on applying AI to agriculture. Researchers are developing models to analyze genetic and environmental data to identify crop varieties capable of resisting extreme conditions such as droughts, temperature fluctuations, and arsenic presence.
