Mexican women's football pioneers honored with new documentary

A new documentary titled ‘La ovación que llegó 55 años tarde’ has been released to honor the members of the 1971 Mexican women's national football team. The production is a collaborative tribute by BBVA México and Liga Femenil MX.

In 1971, the Mexican team reached the final of the second women's world championship held in Mexico, organized by the International and European Women's Football Federation (FIEFF). After defeating Argentina, England, and Italy, the team lost 3-1 to Denmark in the final held at the Azteca Stadium before a crowd of over 100,000 fans. Despite the event's popularity, the players did not receive the institutional support or recognition granted to male players at the time.

Mariana Gutiérrez, president of Liga Femenil MX, noted during the documentary's presentation that the current professional structure of women's football in Mexico is built upon the foundation laid by these pioneers, who competed without professional paths or adequate conditions.
