Tijuana youth football team stranded in Colombia after earthquake

A youth football team from Tijuana, Leyendas Obeliz FC, was stranded in Colombia following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake on August 10, 2026. The 35-member delegation, including 12 children, had been in Armenia, Quindío, to compete in the International Futsal Kids tournament, where they recently won the championship.

The earthquake caused significant infrastructure damage, including disruptions at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, leading to widespread flight cancellations and travel uncertainty. The team reported being physically safe but emotionally shaken by the disaster.

Mexican authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Mexican Embassy in Bogotá, have intervened to facilitate the group's repatriation. The delegation traveled by land from Armenia to Bogotá to secure flights back to Mexico. Reports indicate that several members have already begun arriving in Mexican cities such as Cancún, Mexico City, and Monterrey, while others continue to coordinate their return through diplomatic assistance and community support.
