Mexicana de Aviación loses 2.5 million pesos daily

State-run airline Mexicana de Aviación is experiencing significant financial losses, losing approximately 2.5 million Mexican pesos ($125,000 USD) per day. Managed by the military under SEDENA through GAFSACOMM, the carrier has accumulated costs nearing 38 billion pesos since its relaunch nearly three years ago.

Financial data indicates a severe gap between revenue and operating costs. In the first half of 2026, the airline recovered roughly 1,098 pesos per passenger while the actual cost to transport each traveler averaged 3,188 pesos. To sustain operations, the Mexican federal government provided over 3.8 billion pesos in subsidies during the first six months of 2026 alone.

The airline maintains a marginal presence in the commercial market, holding less than 1% of the total market share. Operating primarily out of Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), Mexicana serves 14 domestic destinations but faces intense competition from established private carriers such as Volaris, VivaAerobus, and Aeroméxico.
