Mexico 2025 traffic accidents rise, with Chihuahua second nationally and Jalisco's Tepatitlán leading locally

The state of Chihuahua recorded 26,626 road accidents in 2025, placing it second nationwide after Nuevo León. While the total number of crashes fell 0.4% from 2024, fatalities increased, with a 4.6% rise in mortality at the state level and a 22.6% jump in the municipal capital. Human error was the dominant factor, accounting for 88% of collisions, and 78% of incidents resulted only in material damage. Fatalities represented about 1% of all crashes.

In Jalisco, the municipality of Tepatitlán reported 1,591 accidents, the highest among interior municipalities, while the state logged 17,400 crashes, ranking fifth in the country. Accident numbers have rebounded after pandemic‑related declines, and 2025 saw at least 300 deaths in Jalisco, plus 111 pedestrian injuries and 141 roll‑over victims, according to the Instituto Jalisciense de Ciencias Forenses.
