Mexico 2027 Economic Package faces fiscal stability concerns

Experts and officials are raising concerns regarding Mexico's 2027 Economic Package, citing potential risks to fiscal stability and public finances. Economists warn that projected income sources may be insufficient to cover the rising costs of social programs and debt servicing, especially as the economy faces low growth and rigid spending patterns.

Analysts from UNAM highlight three critical challenges for the upcoming period: reducing the fiscal deficit, preventing the debt-to-GDP ratio from increasing, and boosting non-oil tax revenue. This follows a 6% drop in income tax (ISR) revenue through July. Additionally, the lack of the Rule of Law is estimated to cost the country 19% of its generated wealth, impacting investment and consumption.

Regarding institutional funding, UNAM Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas confirmed a proposed federal subsidy of 56,005 million pesos for 2027. While this represents a nominal increase of 4.2%, it is a real increase of only about 1% above estimated inflation. Former Finance Secretary Ernesto Cordero Arroyo also emphasized that improving the quality of federal spending is essential to prevent economic complications over the next two years.
