Mexico adapts to AI labor shifts through education and automation
The Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) has called for a transformation of the national educational model to address the impact of artificial intelligence on the labor market. IMCO identifies six key trends, emphasizing that future skills must combine technological proficiency with human capabilities such as critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability. The institute also stresses the importance of STEM education and the need for continuous training coordinated between governments, companies, and educational institutions.
In the retail sector, the supermarket chain Soriana is implementing automation strategies to manage rising operational costs driven by increases in the minimum wage. The company reports that labor costs account for approximately 80 percent of its operating expenses. To improve efficiency, Soriana plans to install 600 new self-checkout stations and has already integrated AI into corporate functions, such as Human Resources, where staff numbers were reduced following the automation of processes.
