Mexico addresses aging population through social welfare and pension increases
Mexico is facing a significant demographic shift as its aging population grows. According to INEGI data, there are 32 million people aged 50 and older in the country, with women making up 53% of this group. This trend is expected to profoundly transform the national economy, labor market, healthcare systems, and pension structures.
At the Second Seminar on Economic Welfare, pensions, and healthy retirement, experts from UNAM emphasized the need for collective public policies to ensure dignity for the elderly. They noted that the challenge lies not just in the number of older citizens, but in the conditions under which they live, highlighting the necessity for sustainable social protection systems.
In response to these demographic and economic pressures, President Claudia Sheinbaum has indicated that social program funding will increase. For 2027, the government plans to allocate 1.1 trillion pesos to Bienestar social programs. While exact figures for the upcoming increases have not been finalized, the administration has committed to raising pension amounts for seniors, women, and people with disabilities above the rate of inflation.
