Mexico addresses high cardiovascular mortality through prevention initiatives

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Mexico. According to INEGI data for 2025, the country recorded 177,673 deaths from heart disease and 32,760 from cerebrovascular diseases, accounting for over 23% of all annual deaths. Approximately 78% of heart disease fatalities are attributed to myocardial infarction or ischemic heart disease.

In response, the Mexican Society of Cardiology and organizations such as Pacientes de Corazón (PACO) and the Mexican Heart Foundation are emphasizing the importance of early detection, particularly for atherosclerosis. To promote prevention, the fifth Cardiovascular Health Fair will be held on September 26 at the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City. The event will offer free services, including glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride testing, as well as electrocardiograms and echocardiograms.

Health authorities note that up to 80% of cardiovascular diseases are preventable through lifestyle changes and risk factor management. A significant challenge remains hypertension; data indicates that 29.1% of Mexican adults live with high blood pressure, yet 40.5% of those affected are unaware of their condition.
