Mexico adopts Brazilian healthcare models for universal service

Mexico is looking to Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) as a model for developing its own Universal Health Service. Officials from the Mexican Ministry of Health and the Mexican Institute of Social Security for Well-being (IMSS-Bienestar) held discussions to advance this cooperation.

The talks focused on several Brazilian initiatives, including the 'Farmácia Popular' program for pharmaceutical assistance and the 'Agora Tem Especialistas' program to improve access to medical specialists. Mexico is also interested in Brazilian expertise regarding digital health and the organization of medical supply chains.

This collaboration follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Brazil and Mexico in April 2026. Technical teams have already met four times to discuss health financing, pharmaceutical assistance, and health technology assessment. Additionally, Brazilian technical missions have assisted Mexico in preparing for mass emergency events, such as the 2027 Women's World Cup.
