Mexico adopts confrontational stance against US policy

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has shifted Mexico's foreign policy toward a more confrontational stance against the United States. Following months of concessions regarding migration, drug trafficking, and trade, the Mexican government is now taking active legal steps to address US policy and conduct.

A primary driver for this shift is the contentious US migration policy and incidents involving US enforcement agencies. Following the fatal shooting of a Mexican craftsman by US officials in Texas in July, the Mexican presidency and Foreign Ministry announced legal proceedings against the United States. Additionally, Mexico has applied to the United Nations Human Rights Commission to request an investigation into these incidents and has filed numerous criminal complaints within the US.
