Mexico advances food sovereignty through native seeds and agricultural technology
To mark World Food Day, Mexican federal agencies have launched initiatives to strengthen food sovereignty and agricultural innovation. In Guerrero, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA) delivered 35 varieties of native maize seeds, preserved by CIMMYT, to producers in Olinalá and Chilapa de Álvarez. These seeds will be sent to the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP) in Iguala for characterization and multiplication.
The government is also expanding the ‘Sembrando Vida’ program in the Montaña Alta and Baja regions of Guerrero, incorporating 900 new beneficiaries. Additionally, the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (Secihti) hosted a demonstration of Mexican agricultural technologies. The event showcased developments in biofertilizers, intelligent irrigation, food conservation, and agricultural waste utilization to bridge the gap between research and productive field activities.
