Mexico advances mandatory cellphone registration linked to CURP

The federal government has issued a decree requiring all mobile phone lines to be registered with the user's CURP (for individuals) or RFC (for companies) by June 30, 2026. The measure, promoted as a tool to combat extortion and fraud, is backed by business groups such as COPARMEX León and CONCANACO, whose leaders Michel Sojo Quiroz and Octavio de la Torre de Stéffano highlighted the security benefits and noted that most users already have their phones registered.

Opposition comes from members of the PAN party, including Deputy María del Pilar Gómez Enríquez, who warned that the registration could expose personal data to new forms of illicit use. She cited evidence of a black market for pre‑registered SIM cards and the risk that insufficient safeguards could turn the protection effort into a source of abuse. The proposal calls for stronger privacy and cybersecurity controls and for clear public information on how personal data will be treated.
