Mexico advances National Reforestation Strategy through local and academic support

Mexico is advancing its National Reforestation Strategy, an initiative promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum that aims to plant 6.6 million trees and plants across 32,000 hectares. The strategy involves collaboration between federal, state, and local governments, as well as educational and social organizations.

In Naucalpan, more than 100 participants, including authorities and citizens, recently planted over 300 native and fruit-bearing trees at Naucalli Park. This effort is part of a broader goal to strengthen urban green spaces to improve thermal comfort and environmental resilience in highly concentrated urban areas.

Additionally, the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo (UACh) has pledged to donate 30,000 trees to the national strategy. The university is focusing on selecting appropriate native species, such as conifers and oaks, to ensure long-term survival and ecological recovery. UACh has already begun restoration efforts in the Texcoco region, specifically in San Jerónimo Amanalco, utilizing students and specialized forest science divisions to restore forest functions.
