Mexico advances new legal safeguards for women and femicide cases

In Puebla, the State Gender Equality Commission approved a draft amendment that adds article 25 Bis to the state law on access to a life free from violence. The amendment establishes that protection orders must be issued based on principles such as concentration, necessity, proportionality, confidentiality, timeliness, effectiveness, accessibility, integrality and a pro‑person approach, and expands the wording to explicitly include girls and adolescents.

Separately, a forum on the proposed femicide law, chaired by Deputy Felipe Miguel Delgado (PVEM) of the Justice Commission, called for limiting the use of amparos in femicide cases, arguing they often delay proceedings. The discussion also pushed for tougher sanctions against public officials who impede investigations or justice, and for incorporating victims' testimonies into a future legislative proposal.
