Mexico advocates for lupus patient rights and improved medical care
Legislators in Mexico are advocating for stronger protections and better medical care for individuals living with lupus and other autoimmune diseases. Amalia García Medina, president of the Commission for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda, has called for legislation to combat discrimination and improve medical training to prevent delayed diagnoses.
In Morelos, the local Congress has officially declared the second week of May as the ‘Week of the Rights of Persons with Lupus and Other Autoimmune Diseases.’ Under Decree 1154, the state health secretariat and municipal health directorates are required to conduct permanent information and prevention activities. The decree also mandates continuous training for first-contact medical personnel to facilitate early detection.
Furthermore, the legal framework aims to prevent social and workplace discrimination against patients. To raise awareness, public buildings may be illuminated in purple or magenta during the designated week.
