Mexico agricultural producers face heavy losses from climate and costs
According to the National Agricultural Survey (ENA) released by INEGI, 58.2% of agricultural producers in Mexico reported losses in 2025 due to climatic factors. Drought was the most significant driver of these losses, affecting 36.8% of production units, followed by wind (19.1%), floods (14%), and frost (7.7%).
Biological factors also impacted the sector, with 36.8% of units reporting losses from pests (33.1%) and diseases (11.2%). Beyond environmental issues, 91.8% of producers faced non-climatic and non-biological challenges. The most prominent of these was the high cost of inputs and services, affecting 76.1% of producers. Other significant hurdles included soil fertility loss (32.1%), marketing difficulties due to intermediaries (28.7%), and insecurity (20.2%).
In response to these pressures, approximately 1.7 million production units reduced spending on labor and inputs, while over 1.43 million households cut domestic expenses related to food, health, and education. Additionally, grain production saw a decline of 10.8% compared to 2022 levels.
