Mexico agricultural sectors face bee mortality and pesticide challenges

Beekeeping and agricultural sectors in Mexico are facing challenges related to pesticide use and pollinator health. In Campeche, honey production in municipalities such as Hopelchén, Calkiní, Hecelchakán, and Tenabo is in crisis. Local producers report massive hive losses and declining profitability due to uncontrolled pesticide use, bee diseases, and a lack of government support. In Hopelchén, the loss of 110 apiaries containing 3,365 hives has been attributed to chemical dispersal via drones. While the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) temporarily closed an agrochemical distributor for improper waste management, producers claim there is insufficient intervention regarding aerial spraying and chemical sales.

In contrast, fruit growers in the Soconusco region of Chiapas are implementing sustainable practices to protect bees and improve the quality of Ataulfo mangoes. Through coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Federal Government, producers are reducing synthetic pesticide use by employing biological control methods, such as releasing sterile flies to combat fruit flies. These efforts include establishing communication channels with beekeepers to notify them of necessary pest control applications, aiming to mitigate risks to pollinators and maintain environmental balance.
