At the Congreso América Digital 2026 in Mexico City, AI ethics expert Mois Navon warned that the industry is moving faster than society’s ability to govern it. Citing a recent Anthropic report, he said AI systems are nearing the point where they can design their own successors, creating a “self‑recursive improvement” problem that threatens alignment and control. Navon urged a strategic pause and the development of robust ethical frameworks, emphasizing that current AI models are powerful statistical tools without consciousness but still pose risks such as cognitive off‑loading, loss of social skills, and high‑stakes decision‑making in autonomous vehicles and weapons.

Meanwhile, the Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana, part of the Tecnológico Nacional de México, took an active role in the XVIII Congreso Mexicano de Inteligencia Artificial (COMIA 2026). Researchers and graduate students presented several papers, including a fuzzy‑logic control system for DC motor speed using bee‑colony optimization, an explainable‑AI method for Parkinson’s disease detection with Grad‑CAM, and a modular LLM pipeline for extracting hypotheses and building knowledge graphs from biomedical literature.
